General Electric (GE) Portable Cassette Player
Originally: GE Cassette Player

Before music libraries became invisible collections of files, a cassette collection took up actual space. Albums, mixtapes and recordings lived on little plastic cartridges that could be labeled, stacked, traded and carried from one player to another. This General Electric portable cassette player belongs to that very physical way of owning sound.
Inside, playing a tape was an equally physical process. Motors, belts, rollers and spindles moved magnetic tape across the playback head while the electronics converted what was stored on it back into sound. The exposed hardware makes that once-routine process visible again.
