Portable CD Player
Originally: Portable CD Player

The portable CD player solved one problem and created another. Music suddenly sounded clean and digital without a cassette tape in sight, but the spinning disc inside still had to survive backpacks, car rides and the occasional bump that could send a song skipping.
That combination of digital media and moving machinery makes the format particularly interesting in hindsight. Beneath the familiar round lid, a motor spun the disc while an optical assembly followed microscopic information across its surface. What felt like the digital future still depended on an intricate physical machine.
