Sony Beta Max Player
Originally: Sony Beta Max

Betamax belongs to one of home video's most famous format battles. Sony introduced a way for television to be recorded onto a cassette at home, turning programming from something that vanished after broadcast into something viewers could save and watch on their own schedule.
The cassette made the experience look simple, but the machine behind it was anything but. Loading and playing magnetic videotape required motors, guides, rollers, electronics and a rotating video-head assembly working in precise coordination. Exposed outside the case, the hardware tells a much richer story than the rectangular box ever did.
