Sony DVD Player

The DVD player had an unusually fast rise from technological upgrade to everyday appliance. Suddenly movies arrived on thin silver discs, scenes could be selected from menus, and rewinding a rental before returning it became a thing of the past.
Sony's machine represents that transition from mechanical home video toward optical digital media. With the enclosure no longer hiding the hardware, the disc mechanism, controls and electronics become the interesting part—a reminder that even the supposedly sleek digital future still depended on a surprisingly physical machine.
